Cairns Brothers have rewarded two of their emerging players with A-Grade contracts following positive displays during the recent Ken Frost Lightning Challenge series. Henry Williams and Darcy Simpson will both train with Brothers A-Grade squad in pre-season and will be given an opportunity to stake a claim for a 2021 jersey.
Brothers Football Manager, Tim Rumford (pictured with the players) said “Both Henry and Darcy have shown commitment, resilience and a tremendous attitude during what has been a tough period; these two young blokes trained throughout the preparations for the Kenfrost Challenge with the senior players and they have the potential to progress. They are both very coachable and having them around the senior players more often next season will not only benefit these two young players, but also the rest of the squad. They have good standards, they are both very enthusiastic and have a good skill set which we will work with them to further develop – I am sure the older blokes will enjoy having them around.“
Darcy, a former Northern Territory RL junior, joined the club in 2019 and impressed playing with the U18s, whilst reaching the Grand Final that year commented, “Since arriving here, I have been made to feel so welcome, Brothers is a great club and I feel very much a part of it; I am looking forward to working more with the senior players and staff next season to keep learning and improve my game.
Henry, an imposing figure at 6’5” is a Cairns Local and had a strong 2019 scoring over 20 tries during the run to the Grand Final, said, “I am really stoked to get this opportunity, it is a good chance for me to see where I am at and challenge myself week in – week out amongst the senior players – we have some very good players in the forwards who are also good blokes, I can learn from them and hopefully progress my game further.”
